Stream Team monitoring workshop July 28

Learn how to read the signs of good water quality through sampling methods, insect identification and basic waterway biology during a one-day workshop on Saturday, July 28.

The Miami Conservancy District and the Hebble Creek Stream Team will offer the free workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for volunteers interested in learning how to sample water quality in rivers and streams.

Volunteers who attend the Beavercreek workshop will be certified as a Level 1 Qualified Data Collector. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary. The workshop will be a casual day of learning with a free lunch provided.

"Miami Valley Stream Team is an education program that focuses on local river-and stream-stewardship,” says Tess Little, Hebble Creek stream team coordinator. “The workshop will 'train the trainer,' teaching local teachers and other leaders how to educate students and friends in how to monitor the quality of our water resources.”

Hebble Creek is located in the Fairborn/Bath Township area. The Hebble Creek stream team volunteer program is co-sponsored by the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust, the Hebble Creek Watershed Coalition, and the Miami Conservancy District.

Educators – as well as people interested in the environment – are encouraged to attend the workshop. The stream team program easily fits into elementary, middle school or high school science curricula.

"The workshop combines informal classroom instruction in the morning with practical application in field during the afternoon,” says Sarah Hippensteel, stream team trainer. “So bring your boots."

Call Sarah Hippensteel at (937) 223-1271 to register. The workshop is limited to no more than 25 participants.
